It was around early 2019 when I came across the word minimalism and basic lifestyle. Since I just started working and looking back to the early months or to the first year working as a young professional all I can remember is buying things that I thought I needed. I mean don’t get me wrong, we all have had that mindset during our college years that if only we get to work and have our own income without depending on our parents, we will definitely buy all those things we always wanted or wished we had.
I noticed that in the first 2 years working, I have not had enough savings while other young professionals around me are busy building their 6 digit savings. Realizing how much I spent on unnecessary things like dining out with friends though sometimes I end up regretting because I actually did not like the place nor the food. All those team outings that require extra money from my actual budget and all those spendings while having this “I-need-this-because-they-have-this” mindset gives me so much headache. I was literally living a lifestyle that I didn’t even need nor wanted. I just somewhat mirror the way my sisters live their early 20s or how my colleagues live life to its fullest like money was never a problem. But that’s not me. Even if I can afford things and buy what I want for myself. It is not the lifestyle I wanted. I never felt the contentment I always long for.
I was introduced to minimalism, basic lifestyle and slow living when I came across the vlog of Haegreendal. She is my top and my favorite content creator and youtuber. All her videos are so heart and soul satisfying. By accidentally watching one of her videos, I told myself “that’s the lifestyle I wanted for the rest of my life”. Modern yet old school and simple yet fancy. From then on, I decided to make my life simpler, more lowkey than evern and as basic as I could. Now that I am working in this new company, I always assure myself that I should not be the same person with the same mistakes when it comes to finances. So even if my favorite color is blue I started to love and embrace the comfort and elegance of the neutral and basic colors. Especially black. I will never go wrong with black. In fact, I am more attracted to guys who’re into black, who’s favorite color is black, and who wears black. Since then, my wardrobe has changed. From all colorful hoodie girl outfits to comforting all-black and basic tones and classic pieces.
While building and maintaining this simplicity in this area of my life, I get to enjoy the small things in life and I spend less time in decision making for the OOTD. Then and then, I started to see how beautiful life could be if I did not complicate things. Instead, I should have made this decision ever since I decided to make choices for myself. From 2019 to 2020, I was able to slowly build my minimalist closet and make things more organized.
With all the benefits I see of embracing a basic lifestyle, I will share with you some tips if you want to keep or start a basic wardrobe.
TIP #1: Know your reason why you want to do this. Why you want to start a basic lifestyle and why you want to declutter.
TIP #2: Organize your clothes based on colors. This will allow you to appreciate your closet even more, like the things you already have and it will make your “finding for the perfect outfit” more easier than ever.
TIP #3: Fold or sort them based on it’s function or purpose. You may group the sweaters, the hoodies or jackets together, the go-to outfits for the office or a bossbabe like you, the swimwear and the intements.
TIP #4: Learn to let go of things that you don’t need, even those most sentimental ones. I know we might have this varsity jacket from our crush, or this cute crop top given to you by your sister or the sleek jeans you got from a friend. No matter what that is, if you have not used it for about 3-6 months, let it go. You can donate or repurpose it.
TIP #5: Enjoy the process of becoming. Yes, it may take time and lots of painful choices to start a basic but joyful life. However, always remember that
