Taking Risks in the Quicksand of Fate

Have you ever been in a situation where you think you’ve been trying your best to get out of it and eventually everything seems to get worse? Well, I’ve been there several times. In fact, I’m in it right now. The great question is, what’s the best escape route?

If you have watched Harry Potter 1 “The Sorcerer’s Stone” or read the book, around chapter 16  titled “Through the Trap Door” (hi to all Harry Potter fans out there or let me say “Potterheads” wink). The popular trio recklessly just put Fluffy to sleep with Harry’s flute, Ron has just opened the trap door, and they struggle with the Devil Snare.

The conversation goes like this:

Hermione Granger: “Stop Moving! I know what this is – it’s Devil’s Snare!”

Ron Weasley: “Oh I’m glad we know what it’s called, that’s a great help”

Hermione Granger: “Shut up! I’m trying to remember how to kill it!”

Harry Potter: “Well, hurry up, I can’t breathe!”
Hermione: “Devil’s Snare, Devil’s Snare…what did Professor Sprout say? – it likes the dark and damp”

Harry: “So light a fire!”

Hermione: “Yes – of course – but there’s no wood!”

Ron: “HAVE YOU GONE MAD? ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT?”

Hermione: “Oh, right!”

The Devil’s Snare is a plant with the magical capacity to choke or strangle anything in its immediate vicinity or that comes into contact with it. The plant will apply a stronger power of constriction if you struggle or oppose Devil’s Snare.

The movies and the books were great, if you haven’t checked any of those please do or you’ll miss half of your life. If you decide to finally take a chance on it, I promise you, you won’t regret it. I will be the first to say “welcome to the Wizarding World, muggle”.

Now, back to the real world. If we check the reality, we have “Quicksand”. It isn’t exactly the terrifying force of nature depicted on the big screen. The hazardous grit is rarely more than a few feet deep. Like the Devil’s Snare, quicksands will not suffocate you if you step into it. Your movements, on the other hand, will cause you to dig yourself deeper into it.

And just like that, I have been in a situation where the more I try to get out, the deeper in I go. The more I try to catch a hold, grasping for ways to get out and move on from here the more I sink into oblivion. It’s not that bad but I know it’s just a situation that I need to get out of. It is not so cold. Instead, it is a bit comforting to me and as scary as it is to be sinking to the death of my dreams.

As I sink into the quicksand, time is slowly moving. The light of hope is burning my eyes, and as eager as I want to get out of this situation I close them and pretend to sleep and wait for the obscure mysteries of life to unlock. I wanted to ask “how much of this illusion is real?”, but no one was available to listen.

I want to be aware when things will change because I know there’s so much more than what I see. I wonder how many days would pass before I’d get out of this. Is there anyone who really truly cares for me, even a little or not at all? When are they going to see the braveheart I have for choosing to stay and face the current hurdle of my life?

I guess there’s nothing much to say. Probably what I want to share is that if you notice yourself in any situation where trying to get out will make things worse, just don’t fight it, it is the easiest way out. That’s the rule of quicksand. You must not enter with hopes of staying because only time will tell if staying is worth it. Stay still and enjoy the moment as you look above the sky for hope and wonder, because you would never know when the time is over for you to get out of that quicksand. Once you are out, it is only up to you if you want to leave sand grain free or if you want to keep a few sands that are attached to you and keep it ‘till to your next journey or destination.

It’s possible that you and I might be in accidental happiness. We are like those castaways, stranded on some unknown shores. It’s wonderful. We all have dreams. We make plans for our future as if we are the captain of our fates. But we are just passengers . We follow the path that fate has laid out for us. It’s not the life we planned or imagined for ourselves. It is, nevertheless, still ours.

To anyone who is in the career quicksands, cheers to that! Who knows after you get out of that you will be the successful person you always wanted to be. To anyone who feels lost right now and is in the quicksands of sadness, cheers for still thriving through life! I hope that you will find yourself genuinely happy soon. To anyone who is in question and trapped in the relationship quicksands, cheers for being true! One day you’ll find the perfect partner in crime. To anyone who is still trying to figure out life, cheers for not giving up! You will certainly find meaning and purpose if you will not give up. Lots of love. Xoxo (:
